What dark clouds surround the hidden history of the Peregrine International tall ships race each other traveling the ancient tea trade route to China The prize to the winner is one billion dollars Many would do anything to win this prize including commit murder Competition runs high and Jim Cutter and his crew prepare the Peregrine to be entered in the race The Peregrine, the American entry resembles the famous 19th century clipper built in a small shipyard in Maryland But, rumor has it that there are some secrets about the past of this ship that might come back and haunt the present owner and bring dark clouds hanging over it when revealed Criminal activity and the theft of a famous Chinese Jewel plus a violent death of a young girl are part of the past history said to be attributed to this ship Jim Cutter is the race director in charge of this ship and intends to research its past with his friend Katy Marbury to learn the truth behind the rumors and the ship s past Like a person that is haunted by hidden secrets just what lies beneath the hull and sails of the Peregrine Searching for the ship s history will lead them on a treasure hunt that will take them back in time learning about the old ships route and dealing with the Chinese authorities Finding the ship to be linked to anything criminal would disqualify them Deep within this mystery we also learn about Jim Cutter s past, his relationship with his ex wife and his hope to connect with his son Jamie who has signed on to be part of his crew and join in the race Taking their son while he was in Africa on assignment, she returned to South America and did not reconnect with him until he decided to join the crew that was going to compete in this race As the race begins and the ships are afloat something happens that lets Cutter know that someone is after the Peregrine and means to not only destroy the ship but kill the crew as well The sails and the masts have been tampered with and when the truth comes out he goes after someone that might be behind it Added in he and Katy are researching the history of the name of the Peregrine where it was last scene in before reported sinking and another ship the Osprey that was a pirate ship that tortured women, men, children and harbored slaves A mystery that leads them to a woman named Mary related to the captain of the original ship and photos that would enlighten to its history and possibly the truth behind the death of a wealthy Chinese man, his daughter and the theft of the China Jewel a valuable emerald Information comes to light that the Peregrine might have been involved in illegal and criminal activities Thinking that the original name of the ship was the Osprey and not the Peregrine With the help of Katy he would learn the truth but the story picks up at this point as we meet Bill Johnson, Cutter s boss and we learn about the race and why he needs the win With the help of Mary Tolchester and the documents she reveals the truth might be found but would it help against the charges and allegations brought to light in the news As the author through Katy tell readers that some boats and their captains smuggled, ran slaves from Africa to the Caribbean and even traded opium to China Boats like theirs, the Peregrine were noted and relied on speed to outrun the police Describing to reader the Chesapeake area, the boats and the characteristics help readers understand the workings of these boats and how they were built Finding documents stating that the Brig Peregrine was lost off New Jersey built in River Sunday was lost in a terrible storm All of the crew drowned and call that was left was the fine brig More information is given on page 49 Throughout the novel the author includes documents from 1840 and other dates to add to the suspense of just what boat really sank, the origin of the Osprey and whether the Peregrine is related to it and is one of the pirate ships On page 71 we learn about the Captain of the ship Richard Tolchester and the robbery and death of the Chinese tea merchant and his daughter The ship involved and crew were from The Eagle Accidents happen, a man dies and other mishaps that could cost the lives of everyone on board including his son as the boat goes missing, then found and then even worse under siege as someone kidnapped the boat, tied up the crew and wants to make sure that not only will Bill Johnson the owner and sponsor of the boat lose money but even , the race But first they have to overcome problems with the wooden spars and the masts and hopefully can make the repairs but what caused the problems you just won t believe and to what extent would someone or the opposition go to win would surprise readers A package would enlighten Cutter about the robbery, the truth behind another ship the Louis 14th and the mystery behind the death of the tea merchant and his daughter and what the real reason behind the murder was Reading Chapter 11 brings it all together But, there is much before they can even think of declaring a win they have to find the Osprey and Katy with the help of a close friend named Peter decide to search, dive and hopefully find something that would clear the name of the Peregrine and learn which ship really sank Cutter has always put his job and career before his family and friends but when something happens to his son and the ship is taken by pirates what will he do Will he be concerned about the race and only the ship Will he try and save him by risking his own life Hearing the words and read the words as they appeared in 1840 as we learn about the Osprey, how it was wrecked and what they think caused its demise As Cutter, Bill Johnson, the FBI and members of the Johnson company go after the pirates we learn about betrayals, who might be behind what happened to the ship, which ships are down and which are still in the race Lies, deceits, hate, greed and murder reign the seas as the crew of the Peregrine fight for their lives and Cutter hopes to get there in time before it s too late But, when Katy and Peter decide to dive something grips the fingers of the right hand and someone wants her dead How does she manage to get away and what is the grenade reaction Just what happens provides the heart stopping ending that will keep you in suspense until the big reveal is made Will they round the Jewel Will they return it to China if they do Who was following them and who was behind what happened to her Peregrine will come back She s not finished yet Challenged by the original Captain Richard Tolchester Hear the words as you read the final pages and learn the truth is revealed and you learn who bought the ship, the truth behind its name and What was the motive behind what happened just how far would someone go for money Read the story, enter the race and find out who wins An ending with twists, turns, a touch of romance and a father who has to decide between his son and his life on the sea China Jewel for those seafaring lovers, those who believe in love and those who might learn to love for love Sometimes we learn what is really valuable than jewels Fran Lewis Another excellent novel from a rising star of the literally world, the research and knowledge of the author shines through and uses his favourite place and characters from Chesapeake. The story revolves around a international tall ships race, following an ancient tea trade route, where the boats have to be replicas from the nineteenth century When the Americans start researching the history of their ship it takes them on a treasure hunt and they find it takes them on a journey into the old ships route and brings them into conflict with the Chinese authorities. The author style of writing draws and enthralls the reader and you feel as if you are there experiencing all the emotions of all the characters in the situations they face The tension and suspense that the writer builds up to a crescendo is superb and the adventures and scenarios that are described are first class The intense relationships which are portrayed in the storyline are excellent and you can relate the feelings to moments in your own life This vibe you get brings the characters even to life. This novel has everything a reader needs, romance, thrills, excitement, treasure seeking and the building of relationships between father and son Another first rate account from one of my favourite authors and look forward to reviewing of his books.

I wasn t sure if I was going to like this book because it s about sailing boats and I don t really know a whole lot about them, but I decided to give it a shot, if nothing to change up the type of book I have been reading Once I got into the plot of this book, it became fascinating and then the mysteries started happening and it grabbed ahold of me I love a good mystery and trying to figure out which other competitor it was that was trying to bring down Bill Johnson and his team brought me back to my first love of books, Mystery Thrillers It s one thing after another with a little bit of romance on the side for the main character, Cutter His first wife left him and took their son while on assignment in Africa She returned home to South America and his son didn t see him again until he joined the sailing crew that was going to compete in the race across the ocean to China And then there is the mystery about the boat itself and where it s namesake came from and what happened to it in 1840 What a story It will drag you in bit by bit until you want to know who the culprits are and what happened back in 1840 Will the mystery surrounding a murder finally come to light Will Cutter lose his only child in this race Does Cutter finally find someone who understands him and accepts him for who he is

GoodBut I would have liked of the sailing and less romance There also seemed to be happenstance that was too easily corrected to be real.

A great read with plenty of action, adventure and romance The China Jewel superbly captures the people and culture of Maryland s eastern shore and their boat building traditions.
