The author is the younger son of the renowned John James Audubon, and the younger Audubon was a capable naturalist and painter in his own right This journal covers an expedition to California he organized in the Gold Rush year of 1849, ostensibly to gather specimens for sketching and description The expedition started out with 60 odd men and 7,000, but it s soon apparent the author needed a minder Men drop dead right and left from cholera Audubon stupidly entrusts the possession of the 7,000 to a complete stranger only to have it stolen He manages to recover about 4,000 of it, but his men are still dying, discouraged, and the expedition almost falls apart as various men give up and leave But a hard, determined core continues Why Is it for the glory of doing natural science Of course not, as you find out in the end Meanwhile, the mens rations are severely cut as they cross deserts, water is scarce and foul, their mules and horses die of hunger and starvation or fall to their deaths down steep mountain sides Audubon meanwhile peppers his journal with many cheerful and admiring descriptions of scenery and bird life in between doleful recounting of all the disasters, until he encounters the greatest obstacle of all, namely the gold fields of California At this point, the expedition falls apart completely Everybody abandons the quest to go panning for gold, and Audubon, who is feeling guilty for the way the journey went, lets them attempt to recoup their fortunes before managing to corral a small number willing to continue on The author himself is almost corrupted by requests for drawings for mundane things like house plans, the people providing services to the gold rush mob are getting rich, if not the gold miners but he manages to stick to his purpose and complete the quest.
